Persistent tooth pain, lingering sensitivity, or swelling may point to a problem inside the tooth.

What is it?
Inside every tooth is a soft tissue called the dental pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. Deep decay, cracks, trauma, or infection can damage this tissue.
During root canal treatment, we remove the affected pulp and clean and disinfect the root canal system. We then fill and seal the canals to reduce the risk of reinfection.
The purpose is straightforward: treat the problem inside the tooth while keeping as much of your natural tooth as possible.
This treatment can often prevent the need for extraction when the tooth is still restorable.
Quick Symptom Check
Answer a few quick questions. This is an educational guide, not a diagnosis. A dental examination is needed to determine whether root canal treatment is appropriate.
Your symptoms can have different causes. We need to examine the tooth before deciding whether a root canal or another treatment is appropriate.
Book an AssessmentThe Procedure
The exact treatment can vary depending on the tooth and the extent of the damage, but the process generally follows these steps.
We assess your symptoms and examine the tooth. Dental X-rays help us look at the roots, surrounding bone, and signs of infection.
Local anesthesia is used before treatment to keep the area comfortable.
A small opening is made in the tooth so the affected pulp and root canals can be reached.
Inflamed or infected pulp is carefully removed from inside the tooth.
The root canals are cleaned, shaped, and disinfected before they are filled.
The canals are sealed after cleaning. The tooth will then require an appropriate restoration, such as a filling or crown, depending on how much healthy tooth structure remains.
Comfort During Treatment
Root canal treatment is performed with local anesthesia. Once the tooth and surrounding area are numb, many patients notice pressure or movement rather than sharp pain.
Some tenderness afterward can occur while the tissues around the tooth settle. If you feel uncomfortable during treatment, let us know so we can respond before continuing.

The treatment area is numbed before the procedure begins.
Tell us if you feel uncomfortable at any point during treatment.
Mild soreness afterward can occur and varies from person to person.
The purpose is to address the problem inside the tooth that may be causing symptoms.
Knowing what will happen can make everything feel easier.

FAQs
The CDCP includes eligible root canal treatment, subject to its clinical criteria, frequency rules and the patient’s eligibility. Some endodontic procedures require preauthorization, while standard root canal treatment on many eligible permanent teeth does not.
Persistent pain, lingering temperature sensitivity, discomfort when biting, swelling, or a gum bump can sometimes indicate a problem inside the tooth. However, these symptoms can have other causes as well. An examination and appropriate dental imaging are needed to determine whether root canal treatment is necessary.
Not to worry, with the benefit of local anesthesia, most people claim that a root canal is no more painful than a tooth filling!
At our dental clinics, you have been prescribed some painkillers to handle the minor pain that may be experienced a few hours after undergoing root canal therapy in Newmarket.
Treatment time depends on the tooth and the complexity of its root canal system. Some cases can be completed in one appointment, while others require additional visits.
It depends on the tooth and how much healthy structure remains. Teeth exposed to greater chewing forces, particularly back teeth, often need additional protection. We will recommend the appropriate restoration after assessing the tooth.
