The "Happy Visit"

When Should You Bring Your Child?

According to the Canadian Dental Association, children should visit the dentist within six months of their first tooth erupting or by their first birthday. At Leslie North Dental, we often recommend starting with a “Happy Visit.” During this friendly visit, your child sits in the dental chair, meets the team, counts their teeth, and gets a quick check of their oral development.

What Does a Pediatric Dentist Really Do?

A pedodontist is specially trained to take care of the dental needs of babies, children, and teens. Pediatric dental services include many treatments to keep your child’s teeth healthy, such as regular check-ups, cleanings, fluoride treatments, and dental sealants to protect against cavities. They also check for and treat problems like tooth decay, crooked teeth, or gum issues early on. They can handle more serious cases, too, such as dental injuries or guiding teeth to grow properly.

Why Does Your Child Need a Pedodontist?

How to Prepare Your Child for Their First Dental Visit

Based on our dentist experience

Before the Visit

Build familiarity and positive expectations.

Explain that the dentist helps keep their teeth healthy and strong, just as a doctor helps keep their body healthy.

Avoid discussing pain, needles, fear, or possible discomfort. Even well-intended reassurance such as “It won’t hurt” may introduce anxiety.

Choose age-appropriate books or short videos that show a friendly dental visit. Familiarity can make the clinic feel less new and intimidating.

On the Appointment Day

Help your child arrive rested and comfortable.

Younger children are often more relaxed and cooperative earlier in the day. Try to avoid times that conflict with naps, meals, or usual rest periods.

A favourite toy, small blanket, or familiar object can make an unfamiliar environment feel safer and more comfortable.

Let your child know they can ask the dental team questions. Feeling heard and involved can provide a greater sense of control and confidence.

Keep explanations simple, calm, and age-appropriate. Allow the dental team to explain clinical tools and procedures during the appointment.

Types of Specialized Care for Children's Dental Health

Dental Cleanings and Exams

Regular check-ups are essential for maintaining children’s oral health. During these visits, dentists perform professional cleanings to remove plaque and tartar, as well as thorough exams.

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride can strengthen the enamel, making teeth more resistant to cavities. Pediatric dentists often apply fluoride treatments to protect children’s teeth from an early age.

Cavity Treatments

If a child develops a cavity, the dentist will remove the decayed portion of the tooth and fill it with a tooth-colored material to restore its shape and function. Fillings prevent further decay and protect the tooth.

Tooth Sensivity Treatmnets

Often referred to as a “baby root canal,” this procedure is used when tooth decay affects the inner pulp of a baby tooth. The infected pulp is removed, and the remaining healthy portion is protected.

Orthodontic Treatments

Pediatric dentists monitor the alignment of children’s teeth and jaws as they grow. Early orthodontic treatments can identify any potential issues, such as overcrowding or bite problems.

Understanding the Cost of Pediatric Dentistry Services

The cost of pediatric dental care depends on your child’s specific treatment needs, oral health condition, and dental insurance coverage. Preventive services such as dental exams, cleanings, fluoride treatments, and routine checkups are often covered by most insurance plans, while treatments like fillings, sealants, or space maintainers may involve additional costs.

At Leslie North Dental, we are committed to providing high-quality, affordable dental care for children and families. Our fees follow the ODA Fee Guide, helping ensure transparent and competitive pricing for all treatments. If you have questions about treatment costs, insurance coverage, or payment options, our friendly team is always happy to help. Contact us today to learn more.

Switched here from my old family dentist a couple of years ago. Had my first cavity filling today—it was minor, and they didn’t freeze. Didn’t feel a thing and was over in 20 minutes. They give dentists a good name!

Excellent. If I could give more than five stars, I would. Dr Nazaran and his whole staff are professional, compassionate, more than capable and I have no “Dentist Fear Syndrome” when going there. As close to pain free dentistry as I’ve known. And they accept CDCP (Canadian Dental Care Plan), so Bonus. I highly recommend this dental office.

As a parent, finding the right dental care for my children is of utmost importance to me. I am thrilled to share our wonderful experience at Dentist, where my son received top-notch dental care that exceeded all expectations.

From the moment we walked in, the staff at Dentist made us feel welcomed and at ease. They have a fantastic way of creating a warm and friendly environment that instantly put my son at ease, which is no small feat for a child who was initially nervous about visiting the dentist.

The dentist and dental hygienist were incredibly patient, kind, and understanding. They took the time to explain each step of the examination and treatment process in a way that my son could understand, turning what could have been a daunting experience into an educational one. I truly appreciate the effort they put into making dental care a positive and educational journey for kids.

I highly recommend Dentist to all parents seeking the best dental care for their children. They have certainly earned our trust, and we look forward to our next visit with smiles on our faces!

Sincerely,
Sara

FAQs

Parents should book their child’s first dental visit within six months of their first tooth appearing or by age one.

Yes. Leslie North Dental proudly participates in the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) to help eligible families access important preventive and restorative dental care for children.

Baby teeth play a very important role in how children chew, speak, and hold space for adult teeth. If a baby tooth is lost too early, nearby teeth can shift into that space and cause crowding or bite issues later.

Yes, they are very safe. We use digital X-rays, which produce extremely low radiation exposure. In fact, the amount is very small compared to everyday environmental exposure.

Dental sealants are thin protective coatings placed on the chewing surfaces of back teeth. They shield deep grooves from food, plaque, and acids, greatly reducing the risk of cavities in hard-to-clean areas.

That happens very often, and it’s okay. Our team is trained to work with nervous or hesitant children with friendly communication and behaviour guidance techniques.
